Sentenced to life

A film by Carin Goeijers

Hardly anyone realizes that a life sentence in the Dutch prison literally means life imprisonment. In contrast to other West European countries there is de facto no pardon till the day you die. In this documentary Carin Goeijers portrays the married life of Louis Hagemann, serving a life sentence, and his wife Jacqueline. Louis has been convicted for a double murder in 2005. They marry in prison in 2008, where they have to cut their wedding cake with a plastic knife. In this film we slowly discover the essence of their unconditional love. How will their relation survive this stagnant and hopeless situation? In the routine of daily telephone calls, letters and visits we follow Louis and Jacqueline in their struggle for justice. When his lawyer asks the High Court to review the life sentence, it brings new hope for the couple. What if Louis suddenly is released? While Louis dreams of a little farm, his wife realizes that after 20 years in prison freedom might be even harder than life inside. Through the inner workings of their relationship we come to understand what it means to be serving a life sentence in the Netherlands.
